European Society for Hybrid Medical Imaging (ESHI) and European Society of Molecular and Functional Imaging (ESMOFIR) to become
ESHIMT
European Society for Hybrid, Molecular and Translational Imaging
Representatives from ESHI and ESMOFIR are hereby announcing that these two subspecialty societies of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) will be merging, resulting in the European Society for Hybrid, Molecular and Translational Imaging (ESHIMT).
During recent years, both subspecialty societies have been dedicated to promoting and coordinating scientific, educational and professional activities in their respective fields. ESHI was founded in March 2016 and has since then been very successful in attracting physicians, scientists, physicists and technologists with a dedicated interest in hybrid imaging.
During its first year of activities, ESHI has been able to organize highly visible and very well attended trainings, workshops and courses on hybrid imaging, and has been involved in adapting the ESR training curricula to adapt for new contents on hybrid imaging.
ESMOFIR had started its activities in 2013, and since then has pursued a variety of educational and scientific activities in translational research in radiology. The primary purpose of ESMOFIR is to promote molecular and functional imaging. The broader scope of ESMOFIR’s activities focuses on education and training in various advanced fields of research, including the integration of multimodal and multiparametric image information, or advances in data analysis of functional and/or molecular imaging datasets.
As a result of merging ESHI and ESMOFIR, ESHIMT shall attract individuals working in the following areas: hybrid imaging incorporating two or more modalities, imaging of tissue function, and imaging at cellular and molecular levels. The mission of the merged society is to develop clinically relevant imaging probes and technologies and translate them from bench to bedside to improve patient care. This will be achieved through training, education and research. ESHIMT is open to anybody working in these areas of imaging.
“ESHIMT will promote hybrid imaging and the validation and implementation of new functional and molecular imaging biomarkers and probes, as well as developing recommendations for their use in collaboration with ESR and other national and international bodies.” {Prof. Katrine Riklund, ESHIMT president, on the added value of merging the societies}
As first next steps, the structure of the new society regarding the Executive Committee, Scientific Subcommittees and Working Groups will be developed. Close continued collaboration with the European Society of Radiology (ESR) Research Committee and EIBALL, the European Imaging Biomarker Alliance, will strengthen these activities and will enable a clear structure of the aims and goals that are being pursued, as well as coordination and alignment between ESHIMT and ESR activities.
We trust in your support and warmly encourage all ESHI members to continue their membership in 2018 and all former ESMOFIR members to obtain membership with the European Society for Hybrid, Molecular and Translational Imaging via the following website: www.eshi-society.org.
Sincerely,
Katrine Riklund, ESHI President
Konstantin Nikolaou, ESMOFIR President
